Hi, and welcome to englishtext.ch.I was born in 1983 in Pennsylvania, USA, and grew up in California. I've lived and worked in Bern, Switzerland since 2009.At university, I studied International Relations and Politics at Brandeis University (Bachelor of Arts).As part of my studies, I spent a semester abroad at the University of Alicante (Spain). Then I did an internship at a global language education company (Sweden).I am a certified teacher of English as a foreign language (TEFL). I have a diploma in teaching English to speakers of other languages (DELTA) from Cambridge University Press & Assessment.I work as a freelance English expert in three areas. I teach as an English coach, I proofread English texts, and I translate from German to English.I've also:

  • co-edited the Journal of the English Teachers' Association Switzerland (ETAS),

  • co-founded the English teachers' association Springboard in Bern,

  • had many years of experience as a certified examiner,

  • participated in regular continuing education programs.

My working languages are English (native language) and German.

Do you use AI and machine translation?

With the incredible boom of AI tools available today, it's no surprise that people are using technology for translation.I use professional language technology like NMT (machine translation), LLM (large language models) and termbases.But this is nothing newTranslators have long been using computers to aid with translation. RBMT (rule-based machine translation) started in the 1950s. As computing capacity increased in the 1990s, SMT (statistical) became possible, which was better.In 2016, NMT became available. The most famous NMT tools now are Google Translate and DeepL.For a computer, NMT is impressively fluent, but it still makes mistakes. The biggest problem is that the text which NMT produces is essentially devoid of meaning. The machine doesn’t understand and therefore, it mistranslates ambiguous terms, misinterprets culturally loaded language, and drops important nuances.LLMs are a major stepLLM stands for large language model. It's what ChatGPT and co. use, and it is very impressive. But LLMs still can't manipulate meaning and can't make decisions the way humans can. LLMs draw on statistical patterns of form and co-occurrence to do translation — just like NMT.While NMTs and LLMs can't translate meaning like humans can, they do offer impressive advantages to translators.A tool is only as good as the hands that hold itThat's why I use them every day to ensure fast and precise translation for my clients. But a tool is only as good as the hands that hold it.I review every text critically and make final decisions based on my understanding of your organization, audience or intention.Technology supports the process.
